Hairdressers Go for Gold
It was anything but a bad hair day in Sydney when hairdressers around Australia, New Zealand and Asia took to the stage to produce amazing hair creations and interpret haute couture in hair as they battled for a place at the 9th APHCA Hair Olympics and Oceanic Grand Master Award which were held at Doltone House, Sydney.
The Philipines dominated the Hair Olympics taking out first and third place in a competition that encouraged hairdressers to create over the top avant garde total looks. In fact the work could be compared to an artist creating an art piece using body painting, makeup, clothes and hair for impact.
The winner, Jackie Rivera from Jackie Rivera Salon, Philipines, introduced a wow factor with her glittering creation that extended the boundaries of hair styling with a model complete with a motorised dove and bubbles floating around her.
Yen-Ling Wei from Hong Kong College in Taiwan took out second place with a sensational feather headress and Reynaldo Pamen from Rey Pamen Salon in the Philipines took out third place with a dramatic red creation and birds of paradise flowers in the hair. New Zealand hairdressers showed it was not only the Bledislow Cup they can win when they took out the three first places in the Oceanic Masters Conversion Event.
This challenging event allows hairdressers to blend their technical and creative skills by starting with Creative Ladies Hair Cut and converting it in 35 minutes to a look that combines makeup, hairpieces and outfits.
First Place went to Ursula Harris from Donna James Hair, Nelson, with a dramatic black creation, 2nd place went to Noelle Cunningham from Schnips PHD, Manukau and 3rd place to Cathy Davys from Cathy Davys Hair Design-Day Spa, Wellington.
In the Creative Ladies Haircut 1st place went to Cathy Davys from Cathy Davys Hair DesignDay Spa, Wellington, 2nd place to Ursula Harris, Donna James Hair, Nelson and 3rd place to Nathapol Tongkou from Hair Club, Thailand.
Vibrant colour and texture dominated Creative Mens HairCut which saw 1st place go to Sue Winai Sae from Puarn Hair Design, Thailand, 2nd place to Edgar Samut from Edwin B Samut Hair Design Thailand and 3rd place to Dilini Shalika Perera Arachchige from Shanya Bridal and Beauty Salon, Sri Lanka.
There was nothing traditional about the picture perfect Brides and Open Bridal Total Look winners were 1st place Lindy Hilton from Emelle Salon, Maitland, 2nd place Noppakorn Petlump from Chart Hair Design Thailand and 3rd place to Fernando Holilene from First Creation Hair Station, Philipines.
Organisers of the event the Professional Hairdressing Association were very excited with the work that was presented and with the inspirational level of technique and creativity that abounded through the competitions.
Overseas hairdressers were able to mingle before the activities on the 10th at a sumptuous cocktail party at the Sugar Room hosted by the Australasian College, Broadway. The PHA would like to thank all the sponsors who made the event possible.

A word from the Chairperson of Point Judges Mr Warren Nesbitt on the 2005 9th Hair Olympics and PHA Regional Pan-Pac Competitions
2005 is the year we will not forget in Hairdressing Compeittions, starting on the 9th of May with the pre-done IHS Mini Comps at Luna Park. Then three of the best regional competitions in Australia on the 19th June - Newcastle, 4th August - Tamworth and the 14th August - Port Macquarie.
These Pan-Pac regional competitions have more competitors than most state competitions every year so this year will be no different. Especially with a host of new events such as the regional photographic competition and the re-introduction of Manikins for 1st and 2nd years and the long awaited NEW TOTAL LOOK.
To finish the year with the PAN - PAC’s would normally be any competition followers idea of a good year, but this year we are hosting the Oceanic Masters and the 9th Asia Pacific Hairdressing and Cosmetology Association (APHCA) Hair Olympics at the new Sydney Hilton.
On Monday the 10th of October put this in your diary it will be bigger and better than ever.
